Golfing II

Another photo of golf buddies.

This was the suggested skill level of the tees we started from.  Yes, I am as awesome as a 7 year old girl!

One day we decided to practice at the base driving range.  The driving range is almost never used.  I took a few golf balls with me, then went out and collected them.  I ended up with about 70.  Woohoo, free golf balls!  Ready for my next bout.

I'm getting better.

My first golf experience.  The lake is where I met the duck who is clearly fed by humans too much.  This pic did not capture how beautiful this course was.  Which is why I go.  That and driving the cart.

The duck that wanted food.  It was not shy.  And yes, I had french fries.  But I did not give him any.

Co-workers who were much better at golfing.  He didn't want to be on my team for the tournament because he wants to win.

Another co-worker.

The chickens all got in a line and watched us golf until they got bored.

My first awesome golf outfit.

This was the first time I went golfing.  Along with the second and then that one time I went and tried to make myself better.  The biggest problem I have with golfing right now is I haven't figured out the snacks.  Gold itself isn't that interesting, so there must be some other redeeming quality to it besides hitting the ball.  I figure that would be the snacks.  The first time I went I didn't know this and didn't bring any snacks.  The second time I brought fruit snacks (#winning), trail mix, and cliff bars.  The cliff bars are a bust.  So I need to think of something better.  I'm open to suggestion.

Trying to figure out why the green is so far away.

Contemplating my existence as a golfer

The giant chasm is what you are supposed to hit your golf balls over.  If you can make them go airborne, that is.

My golfing people.

More beautiful course.

Hit it over the marsh!

Golfing pros
This is my second time golfing.  I went with two doctors and this gal, my partner in crime.  We love golfing.  Actually maybe not, but we love doing things.  This particular day didn't go so well.  Even though there was no one behind us waiting, they kicked us off the golf course for being too slow.  I guess that's how it goes when it takes a billion shots to get the ball where it needs to go.  We are partnered in a golf tournament this coming Friday to support the new Chief selects.  I plan on just drawing a unicorn on my scorecard.

Funny Stories of the Week

Over the log!!
Dave was my awesome photographer while I was running.  He would have run it too but he had a broken knee.  Dave- you the man!  I wish you'd come to Guam!  Actually I don't think you'd like it here, but still.  I miss hanging out. :(
Rope challenge, made it all the way across.
Final slide to victory!
This was the mud run I did in Pensacola back in October of last year.  It was really fun and all my Pensacola peeps should go this year.

Okay, on to the funny stories of the week.  So I had this letter that I was printing and the printers are scattered over the building.  I don't have one in my office.  So I printed, went to the printer and it wasn't there.  I printed again, went to the printer and it wasn't there.  But this guy who worked in the same office as the printer turned a little red and said, "Uh, ma'am are you trying to print a word document?"  I said yes.  He then apologized and said he though it was what he was trying to print and kept shredding the document.  Apparently we were hitting print at the same time, but he thought the wrong thing kept printing, so he would shred it.  I went back to print it a third time and this time (there was actually a yeoman doing the printing and the yeoman did this) we printed a page that said "DON'T SHRED THE NEXT PAGE!!!"  Then printed the letter.  When I went to get the letter a third time, the guy in the office was laughing and his face was red as he handed me the letter.

Another funny thing that happened is we have a bunch of people who are claiming they are not adjusting well to the rigors of life and need to see a psychologist so they don't have to work.  We are trying to figure out what to do with them and how to separate those who really are struggling from those who are faking.  So I called the hospital psychologist assigned to us and had a really great talk about how he diagnoses and what he does to make sure someone has a condition versus someone who is just making stuff up.  At the end I got his phone number in case I needed to call him back.

The next day he was in the building meeting with our regular doc and some others to discuss this same issue.  Regular doc invites me to the meeting because he thought it would be helpful if I were there.  Later on, regular doc comes back and says, just kidding, the psychologist doesn't want you there because he says that lawyers and psychologists usually see things differently and he doesn't want you interfering.  So I'm all like "wait, wait, wait... soooo, me and this guy have a great conversation yesterday and we're developing synergy and he even gives me his phone number to call him back and now you're saying that he doesn't want to see me?  Well fine- I thought we had something, but I guess not."  Doc just looks at me and says, "I hate being the middle man."

Last funny story isn't mine, but I'm still telling it.  I went golfing with Doc, PAO, and Doc 2.  Doc 2 is a funny guy that works on one of the ships.  He says he keeps his job interesting by making his patients laugh.  So he went in to this appointment this week and they patient says, "I think I have pneumonia."  Doc 2 says his eyes got real big and he says "really, you really think so?" all serious.  He gets his stethoscope and puts on the man's chest and then jumped back and looked at the guy in shock.  Patient says "what?  What is it?"  Doc 2 says, "oh my gosh I haven't seen anything like this since med school.  I need a second opinion."  Doc 2 goes into the hallway and grabs a corpsman and says to the corpsman, " go listen to this guy's chest and pretend it's really serious.  Corpsman comes in, puts stethoscope on chest, turns to Doc 2 and says "Wow, that's serious."  The patient is then really all like, "what, what, oh my gosh, what's going on?  Do I have pneumonia?"  Doc 2's just all like, "no, a head cold, go take some sudafed and come back on Monday."

Danger, Will Robinson!!

Guam is beautiful at times, but can also be dangerous.  Since I've been here, I've been poised, infected, burnt, and suffered a serious of minor setbacks.  The first picture is the mango sap poison.  Mango sap has the same substance in it as poison ivy.  So that happened the first week.  The second picture is I don't know what.  My skin blistered and fell off and the wounds kept oozing.  I thought when I took this picture that I was getting over it, but it's so much worse now.  I might actually have to go to the doctor to figure out what this is.  This is even my good leg.  The other one is really gross and I thought to preserve the decency of the internet, I shouldn't post it.

I have also been sunburnt so bad that I almost couldn't walk.  You really have to be diligent with the sunscreen.  The thing is, my skin peeled and it was after that that the skin dried out so badly that it was just terrible.  The whole sunburnt area was blistered and when it dried out, the dry skin was flaky and when I tried to moisturize it like it says to do on "how to take care of sunburn" it burned for 10 minutes.  Wearing clothes was painful.  Moving was painful.  Everything was painful.

I have also been having muscle injuries.  Random, small muscles injuries.  My knee pulled a muscle and I couldn't really bend it for three days.  My back has a strained muscle from dead-lifts, my hamstring, maybe another.  I don't know if it's because I don't hydrate enough or what, but I do know that Guam is a harsh environment to work out in and maybe I just took it too quick too soon.  I feel acclimated now so I should be able to push myself harder.

The Golden Easter Eggs

The Mighy Mango Tree!!

This thing was loaded with mangos for months!

The chickens love the mangos but they eat them like toddlers... they take giant bites out of them and leave the rest.

This is what I refer to as the Golden Easter Eggs.  When I wake up and they are littered across the ground.
My mango tree is famous.  They get really big and are sweet tasting.  I took them to work and people are still requesting them.  But the season is ended.  There are no more mangos right now.  I will have to wait a few months.  People would come by all the time to ask to get mangos.  I always said yes, but sometimes it was really annoying.  I had people show up at 0630 knocking on the door asking about mangos.  But they would also offer to cut my grass or rake leaves for me in order to get them.  So that's a plus.  Most people were nice about it, but a couple were rude.  I would say all in all, this tree produced over 500 mangos this season.  Looking forward to the next!
